yreka-corning-alyssa-scala-text-sized.jpgYREKA – The Yreka Lady Miners picked up a win against the Corning Lady Cardinals (2-2, 16-12) on Thursday, 6-1, but fell to the league-leading West Valley Lady Eagles (6-0, 20-8-1) on Friday, 10-0.

Yreka took the lead over Corning, 3-1, when Stephanie Leyva belted a two-run dinger in the bottom of the second inning. Yreka added three more runs in the fifth inning, when Leyva tripled, making the final 6-1.

Lady Miner Leyva had a monster day at the plate, going 2-2, with a long-ball, a triple, a run, five RBI, and a walk. Ashlie Smith went 2-3, with a run, and an RBI. Sara Jones was 2-4, with two runs. Kaitlin Weckerle went 2-4, with two steals. Brie Phillips scored two runs, going 1-3. Kayla Graves registered the complete game win (7IP, ER, 5H, BB, 6K).

Yreka spent one day back over .500 in the Northern Athletic League before dropping to even at 3-3 (11-13), with the loss to West Valley. The Lady Eagles had a 1-0 lead after the first inning, and added two more runs in the second to up the margin to 3-0. Mean while, four of the first seven Lady Miners headed for the pine via strikeouts.

Two more runs in the top of the third inning increased the West Valley lead to 5-0. West Valley added another run in the fourth inning and four runs in the sixth inning to make the final 10-0.

For Yreka, Smith went 1-2, and Jones was 1-3. Graves started and took the loss (3IP, 5R, 7H, 2BB, K). Smith relieved Graves in the fourth inning (3IP, 5R, 6H, BB, 2K).

Yreka will travel to Anderson (0-5, 2-11) on Tuesday, April 29.
