YREKA – A few years back, the Yreka Lady Miners were dominating the Etna Lady Lions in volleyball. For the past two years the reverse has been true, with Etna having a 4-0-1 record against the Lady Miners.

The Lady Lions won again on Tuesday night, 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-20).

As the score suggests, game one was close the entire way, mittan-ad-b.jpgwith Etna leading or tied with Yreka until late in the game. The Lady Lions were ahead 24-21, when Yreka rattled off four straight points, including a kill by Katie Todd, to take the lead 25-24. Etna responded by scoring the next three points, with a tip for a point by Claire Pynes to win it 27-25.

Game-two was also close with five lead changes in the first half of the match. Yreka took its last lead of the game, when Whitney Ebejer slammed a kill to make it 11-10. An ace by Taylor Brooks put Yreka up by two points, 12-10.

A side out made it 12-11. Back-to-back aces by Lady Lion Annaleisa Nadig gave Etna the lead 13-12. Yreka’s Mallory Greenfield responded with a kill to tie the game 13-13. However, a kill by Pynes put the Lady Lions up 14-13, and Etna went on to win 25-20.

The Lady Lions led game-three from start to finish, winning 25-20 on an ace by Sarah Loogman.

Pynes led Etna with 12 kills and an ace. Nadig had four aces and three kills. Loogman had four kills, two aces, and a pair of blocks. Paige Finley recorded eight assists and three kills.

Unofficially, Yreka was led by Carrie Watson with six kills. Ebejer had four kills and two blocks. Greenfield registered four aces.

Leading 17-8, a vastly improved Lady Lion JV team looked like it was going to run away with game-one of their match against the Lady Miner JVs. However, Yreka out-scored Etna 11-1 to take the lead 19-18, in large part due to strong serving by Karlee Andrighetto. A kill by Etna’s Abby Travis tied it at 19-19. The Lady Miners then went up 24-20, and it looked like the game was over. Etna wasn’t quite ready though, and took the lead back twice, at 26-25, and 27-26. Yreka completed its comeback when Kalina Betts ended it with an ace, 29-27.

Etna rebounded from the setback by winning a hard fought game-two 25-21, and then running away with game-three 15-6, for a 2-1 match victory.
