yreka-hoopa-rodney-grant-text-sized.jpgETNA – A pair of wins over Mt. Shasta, a pounding of Hoopa Valley, and a loss to West Valley added up to a 3-1 record for the Yreka Miners at the Marble Mountain Tournament.

The Miners finished out the tournament with a 9-6 win over the Mt. Shasta Bears, on Saturday. Mt. Shasta went out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, one in the second, and one in the third to go up 5-0.

Yreka responded with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it 5-4. Two Miner runs in the fourth inning gave Yreka the lead 6-5. The Bears tied it in the top of the fifth inning, 6-6, but Yreka put up three runs in the bottom half to win 9-6.

yreka-west-valley-ethan-garrett-text-sized.jpgFor Yreka, Robert Moeai went 2-for-3, with two RBI and a run. Andrew Jones was 2-for-3, with a run, an RBI and a walk. Wade Berryhill scored a run, knocked in an RBI, and took a walk, while going 2-for-4. Andrew Ward was 1-for-2, with two runs, an RBI, and a walk. Rodney Grant scored a run and went 2-for-4. Ethan Garrett was 1-for-3, with a run and a steal.

Garrett started the game on the mound and pitched two innings. Garrett gave up four runs, three earned runs, three hits, two walks, while striking out four. Moeai relieved Garrett and notched the win. Moeai pitched three innings, giving up two runs, an earned run, four hits, and a walk. Moeai struck out two batters.

In the first game of the day for Yreka, the Miners pounded the Hoopa Valley Warriors 10-0. Yreka scored in all four innings in which they batted, scoring two in the first, five in the second, one in the third on a Devin Howard dinger, and two in the fourth.

Grant lit up the Warriors for three runs, an RBI, and a steal, while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Garrett also went 2-for-3, with two runs, two RBI, and a steal. Ward was 2-for-3, with two runs, a double, and an RBI. Berryhill went 2-for-3, with two RBI, and a double. Howard went yard in his only at bat.

The Yreka Miners baseball team finished the first day of the Marble Mountain tournament in second place in Pool “C,” behind West Valley.

The Miners won their first game against Mt. Shasta 2-1, scoring a run in both the first and fifth innings. Ethan Garrett led the Miners, going 1-3, with two steals, as well as both Miner runs. Rodney Grant went 1-for-2, with a steal and a walk. Ethan Garret recorded a six-inning complete game win, giving up one unearned run, two hits, and a walk, while striking out 11 Bears.

Erik Acord scored the Bears’ only run, while going 2-for-3, with a steal. Trent Hough and Erik Thelander each went 1-for-3. Matt Houston pitched all six innings and was tagged with the loss. Houston yielded two runs, five hits and three walks. Houston fanned five batters.

Yreka faced a tougher challenge in game two of round robin play, when they fell to the West Valley Eagles 9-3. The Eagles scored all nine of their runs in the first two innings, with three in the first, and six in the second. Yreka scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning.

For the Miners, Grant went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Jones knocked in a run and went 1-for-3. Garrett walked twice, stole a base and scored a run. Andrew Ward walked and scored a run. Moeai was 1-for-2.
