YREKA – The Yreka Miners picked up their second win in less than a week against the Trinity Wolves on Tuesday, at Hibbard Field. Trinity led 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but the Miners scored nine runs in their first two at bats to take control of the game 9-2. They would go on to win 14-4 in six innings.
Miner Taylor Barlow led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk, stole second base, and went to third on a ground out. With two outs, Wade Berryhill walked and stole second. Joshua Lee took a stroll to load the bases. Aaron Blazier reached on a fielder’s choice, when Trinity’s shortstop went to second on Blazier’s ground ball. The second baseman was several feet from the bag allowing Lee to arrive safely. Barlow scored on the fielder’s choice. Christian Charles cleared the bases with a double, giving the Miners a 4-2 advantage, after one inning.
Kevin McCanna led off the second inning for the Miners with a walk, and moved to second on a single by Barlow. McCanna was erased when he was caught stealing. Barlow advanced to second on a steal and third on a wild pitch. With one down, Zach Salvestro walked and then stole second base. Berryhill walked to load the bases. Barlow and Salvestro scored when Lee reached on an error by the Trinity third baseman. Berryhill moved to second on the error.
Berryhill and Lee moved up 90 feet on a passed ball. Blazier walked. Charles picked up three more RBI, with a double down the left field line, making it 9-2 at the end of two.
Trinity scored two runs in the top of the third on two walks, a couple of wild pitches, a fielder’s choice and a ground out, 9-4.
McCanna led off the bottom of the third for the Miners with a double, went to third on Barlow’s ground out, and scored on a wild pitch, 10-4.
Both teams went quietly in the fourth inning.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Barlow walked. A single by David Jesperson and an error on the play by Trinity’s left fielder advanced Barlow to third base and Jesperson to second. Barlow and Jesperson scored on a Salvestro double. Berryhill followed with another double, scoring Salvestro and giving Yreka a 13-4 lead at the end of five innings.
Yreka finished off the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning via the 10-run mercy rule. Jonathan Hanna singled to lead off the inning. Charles was hit by a pitch, moving Hanna to second. The next batter struck out. McCanna reached on a fielder’s choice that erased Charles, but moved Hanna to third base. A Barlow single brought Hanna home and ended the game, 14-4.
Christian Charles led Yreka at the plate, going 2/3 with two doubles and six RBI. Taylor Barlow was also 2/3, with three runs scored, an RBI, two walks and a steal. Wade Berryhill went 1/1 with two runs scored, an RBI, a double, three walks, and a steal. Zach Salvestro was 1/2 with two runs, two RBI, a double, two walks, and a steal. Kevin McCanna was 1/2 with a double and a walk. Jonathan Hanna was 1/1 with three runs. David Jesperson went 1/1 with a run.
Aaron Blazier started for Yreka (2 IP, ER, H, BB). Christian Charles relieved Blazier in the third inning (2 IP, ER, 2 BB, 2 K). Zach Slavestro finished the game on the hill (2 IP, K).
With the win, Yreka improved to 2-3-1 on the season. The Miners will play in the Marble Mountain Tournament in Etna and Fort Jones this weekend. Yreka opens with…Trinity (0-4) on Thursday at 7:00 pm.
