JV Lady Miners light up Mazama

bowen-ad-rev.jpgKLAMATH FALLS – The Yreka Lady Miner JVs exploded for 32 runs in a double-header against the Mazama Vikings on Tuesday, winning 13-10 and 19-11.

Makayla Lindley picked up a complete game win in game-one. Haley Weldon, Lindley, Tianna Cruz, Tailer Johnson and Rachel Luetke all had two hits, with Lindley hitting a double. Alyssa Andrews and Shastina Cloyd each had a single.

Cruz struck out five batters in game two, while going the distance for the win. Cruz helped herself with four hits. Lindley hammered out three hits, including a double.

“This was a very positive step going into Yreka’s softball tournament this weekend. It’s early in the season for the JV Miners, but they are off to a 4-1-2 record in preseason,” said Coach Rick Landrum.

Lions sweep Bears

valley-tire-red-300.jpgFORT JONES – The Etna Lions and Mt. Shasta Bears opened their Shasta Cascade League season on Tuesday, with the Lions sweeping the double-header. Etna took game-one 8-2 and game-two 4-3. For the improving Bears, the loss in game-two marked the second time in less than a week that they have been in a position to win a game against a quality opponent. Last Thursday, the Bears took Yreka to the eighth inning before falling 3-2.

Although the Bears struck first in game-one with a run in the top of the first inning, the rest of the game went the Lions way. Etna put up four runs in the bottom of the second inning, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth. The Bears added a run in the top of the seventh inning, making the final 8-2. Lady Lions and Lady Bears split SCL opener

etna-v-mt-shasta-softball-front.jpgFORT JONES – It was an early season Shasta Cascade League showdown that featured two of the league’s premier pitchers, and two of the teams favored to win the league title. A sweep by either team would have given it the inside track. Instead, the Etna Lady Lions and the Mt. Shasta Lady Bears split their double-header, with Mt. Shasta winning game-one in the top of the seventh, 3-2, and Etna winning game-two in the bottom of the seventh inning, 4-3.

In game-one, Katie Eiler got things started for Etna in the bottom of the first inning, with a bloop single to right field. Tessa Burrone laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Eiler to second base. Andrea Pearson then drove in Eiler to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.

svpt-small.jpgMt. Shasta pitcher Kayla Spini and Etna’s Finley dominated the next two innings, with Spini recording four strike outs and Finley notching six.

Mt. Shasta got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. The first two batters were retired, but an Etna error allowed Lady Bear Tori Weatherford to reach first base. Kismet Prosper reached on a catcher’s interference call, which moved Weatherford to second base. Spini then ripped a double to deep center, plating Weatherford and Prosper, giving the Lady Bears a 2-1 lead. (more…)

Finley makes a two-sport Impact

paige-finley.jpgWhere do you start writing about Etna Lady Lion Paige Finley? How about basketball?

Finley led the Etna Lady Lions varsity basketball team in scoring, assists, and steals on their way to a Shasta Cascade League title. Finley also picked up SCL Most Valuable Player honors.

Finley had little time to rest before jumping into softball…like about a day. The day after basketball playoffs ended, Finley and her teammates headed to the Gridley softball tourney. The result was a Lady Lion 10-0 win over Pierce in game-one.

Finley pitched six innings and gave up three hits, three walks and fanned eight. At the plate she went 1/2, scored two runs, had a double, and took a pair of walks. She also pitched the second game of the day, winning 12-2 over Esparto. Finley had eight strikeouts, and allowed two earned runs and two hits. The Lady Lions and Finley went 3-1 at the tourney.

y-ad-300.jpgLast weekend, the Lady Lions won the Anderson tournament, going 7-0, with three shutouts. Finley gave up a total of nine runs in the seven games. Overall this season, Finley is 10-1 with a 1.81 ERA, and four shutouts. Her 10 wins leads the North Section. She is second in shutouts.

Take all that in to account, and it’s easy to see why I consider Paige Finley an Impact Player.

The Impact Player Award is given on a monthly basis and goes to Siskiyou County high school athletes, male or female, that have had a significant impact on the success of their team. I select the players based on my own observations, often in consultation with the player’s coaches. (more…)

2009 Sprotsmen’s Expo a success

mittan-ad-300.jpgYREKA–More than 1,500 people made their way to the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds last Saturday for the 2009 PremierWest Bank Siskiyou Sportsmen’s Expo.

“It was our best expo yet,” said fair CEO Rebecca Desmond. “The weather cooperated and the families had a blast!”

Youngsters were challenged early on by the trout this year at the California Department of Fish & Game pond but the bite rate picked up it the afternoon. Other young people were busy climbing the US Army rock wall and still others were taking a hand at archery with the Siskiyou Bowmen. Parents and other adults were busy talking with vendors who filled two exhibit buildings and acres of space outside. (more…)

The Lady Lions outscored their opponents by a combined 65-9, with three shutouts.

Etna opened with an 8-0 blanking of South Fork. Paige Finley started and got the win, going four innings and allowing just one hit. Tandy Thackeray pitched one inning, giving up one hit.
