sis-dist-ad-300.jpgWOODLAND – The North Siskiyou Babe Ruth 14s All-Stars won their opening game against Elk Grove, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon at the North State Tourney held at Clark Field.

Siskiyou put up deuces in the first, third and fourth innings, with a single run in the fifth inning. Elk Grove scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning.

Christian Charles was “Da Man” for Siskiyou on both the mound and at the plate against Elk Grove. Charles started and went five innings for the win, giving up one earned run, two hits, and three walks. He struck out five batters.

Charles went 3/3 with the bat, driving in three runs, and crossing the plate twice, as well as swiping a pair of bags.

Colby Rimmer was 2/4 with two runs scored, and two steals. Tanner Schaefer went 1/2, scored, and took a walk.

The win against Elk Grove led to a round-two match up with Hayward, on Sunday. Hayward defeated Palo Alto in its first round game.

It appeared that Siskiyou had something going in the top of the first inning against Hayward. Lead off batter Russell Sweet roped a shot that was too hot to handle for the Hayward shortstop, and he reached on the error. However, Sweet was erased when he was caught stealing. With two down, Christian Charles went to the opposite field, over the right fielder’s head, for a double. It would be the only hit of the game for Siskiyou. Sweet and Charles were also the only base runners for Siskiyou in the game. Colby Rimmer started on the hill and was saddled with the loss.

Hayward, on the other hand, put up 10 runs in five innings for the shutout win. Hayward picked up a run in both the first and second innings, and then blew the game wide open with seven runs in the bottom of the third inning, for a 9-0 lead. Hayward added one more run in the fourth to make the final 10-0.

Defensively it was feast or famine for Siskiyou. On the feast side, Siskiyou turned a 1-6-3 double play in the first inning to get out of a major jam. They retired two runners at the plate. Catcher John Durney gunned down a would-be base stealer in the second inning, and Ryan Todd made a nice backhand stab and throw at third base to retire a batter.

On the famine side, Siskiyou committed five errors.

Siskiyou faces the host team, Woodland, at 7:30 pm on Monday in an elimination game.
