The California State 4-H Field Day was held on Saturday, June 2, 2018. State field day has many competitive contests and skills events for 4-H youth to enter. Contests range from Photography, Fashion Revue, Interview and Presentation Competitions to Plant Science and Entomology Identification skills challenges. Over 1000 youth participants representing nearly every California county participate in the state competitions. Four Siskiyou County youth participated in State Competitions.
Quina Cundall from the Butte Valley 4-H participated in the State Fashion Revue competition. She participated in the traditional sewn category that features garments that the participant has constructed, showcasing sewing skills and the ability to coordinate an outfit. The outfit must be sewn by the member. Quiana earned a medalist award for her creation.
Yulianna Valdez of the Big Springs 4-H entered the Sewing skills competition and earned a blue award. The skills competition requires members to have overall sewing knowledge about seams, interfacing, linings, stitch types and much more.
Madysson Cervelli of Big Springs 4-H participated in the State Fashion Revue competition. She participated in the See it, Sew it Challenge competition. This competitions required members to start with a picture of a new garment or outfit from a current magazine, catalog, store display or website. They were to list the retail price of the outfit or garment. Then they got creative and copied the outfit to make it fit you. Madysson earned State winner honors with her outfit.
Callahan Zediker of Big Springs 4-H participated in the State Fashion Revue competition in the Retro/Vintage Inspired Challenge competition. The challenge required the individuals to create an outfit that is inspired by a vintage design using new fabric and notions. Vintage could be any style that is 20-100 years old. The entry must state the year or period of the design and include a drawing, photo or description of the design that inspired their outfit. Callahan’s outfit was inspired by the late 1950’s and early 1060’s fashion of Jacqueline Kennedy. Her vintage creation earned her a State Winner award. Callahan also competed in the State Photography contest with two photos. Her “Boot Barn” photo was awarded the State Best of Show award over all photographs.
