The College of the Siskiyous Eagles women’s team cruised through the first two games of the Contra Costa Tournament over the weekend, but it took a layup with six second remaining to claim the title over Feather River.
The Eagles (7-1) opened the tourney on Thursday with a 107-30 beat down of Ohlone (0-7). Natalie Karlsson was Siskiyous’ top scorer in the game, followed by Acacia Ross with 14. Anhelica Shanrock, Sam Benedict and Nichelle Laffoon each scored 12 points.
COS won the tourney semifinal 95-49 against L.A. Harbor (5-5). Kacey Cain scored 25. Nichelle Laffoon had 15. Anhelica Shanrock recorded 13, and Beth Derner added 11 points.
The final against Feather River (7-3) came down to a layup by Kacey Cain with six seconds remaining to play, earning the Eagles a 77-76 win, and the tourney crown.
Beth Derner led Siskiyous with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Kacey Cain had 18 points–nine in the fourth quarter. Anhelica Shanrock dropped in a trio of treys and had 17 total points. Nichelle Laffoon contributed 14 points.
Cain was selected tourney MVP. Laffoon and Derner garnered All-Tourney recognition.
Next up for the Eagles will be Cuesta (6-2) at the Allan Hancock Tournament on Thursday.Share on Facebook
