The Weed Cougars varsity squads swept the Raiders on Monday night in Burney. The Cougar boys won 85-45, and the girls were victorious 43-31.

The Weed girls put up 16 points to the Raiders’ nine in the first quarter. At halftime, it was the Cougars on top 23-13. Savanna Reynolds scored 10 points in the first half. Christina Amezcua had seven.

The Cougars (7-5) nipped Burney (5-7) in the third period 8-6. It was a 12-12 tie in the final frame. Reynolds had a huge 4th quarter, scoring 10 points, to help secure the win.

Reynolds scored a game-high 21 points. Amezcua contributed 11, and Nicole Arguello hit a pair of 3-pointers for six points.

The Weed boys blitzed Burney in the first half. The Cougars outscored the Raiders 20-9 in the opening period and 24-11 in the second stanza, for a 45-20 lead at the intermission. Xavia Martinex dropped in four treys, a pair of deuces and a 3-point play the hard way in the half, for 19 points.

Weed (8-3) played the scoreboard like a pinball machine in the third quarter, racking up 29 points to Burney’s 14, making the score 73-34 heading into the fourth quarter. The final period saw the Cougars add 12 points to its total, while Burney (2-9) scored 11.

Martinez led the world in scoring with 27 points, including six 3-balls. Danny Formhals hit a trio of treys and had 11 total points. Angel Nicholas had 11, and Austin Robbins added 10 points.

Both varsity teams are at Chester on Tuesday night.
